Prison Fellowship Nepal

Victim Support and Rehabilitation Program

Model Rehabilitation Center

The fourth batch of vocational training was started from November 2003. Although we are facing financial hardship, we have 16 trainees in this fourth batch. The number is increasing than third batch. We cannot establish new unit because of financial crisis and hoping to establish after good financial condition. We have tailoring and electronics with electric wiring trainings. They have also counseling class each day on behavioral, psychological, social and health aspects and practice on vegetable garden and fishery. It is great pleasure to inform you that most of the trainees completed the training, got job in private shop and workshop. Some of them had established their own shop. They are doing good job. The fourth batch of vocational training will be completed on April 2004.

The numbers of trainees are more increasing and some are in queue due to reaching a quarterly publication "Prison World" bulletin in all jails of Nepal. So, we had more pressure to increase the quota of trainees, which affects financial condition and management issues. We request to pray on these issues so that Lord may provide us wisdom and fund to handle this situation and serve more needy people.

'Prison World' Bulletin:

We have felt communication gap between inmates and Prison Fellowship, Nepal. In Nepal, there are seventy-three prisons through out the country. There is no road access in many prisons specially north belt, mountain and Himalayan regions and it is true that there are no single volunteer and difficult to get devoted Christian volunteer. How can we reach there and link with them? To see this dire need we have created wonderful idea to publish 'Prison World' Bulletin in Nepali language. We are publishing this bulletin quarterly with thousands copy and distributing freely to prison and church and communities by mail. We hope that it will help to come closer, prison and community. Through this project we are able to link with inmates for help, information and encouragement with each others. It is like "Global Link" a publication of PFI to National ministry.

Prison Resource Center:

Prison Resource center was established in Model Rehabilitation Center. The Resource Center will be probably the first research center in Nepal those who want to research in prison sector. We are preparing different prison related books in Nepali version. All the books related to prison in Nepali and English Language will be kept in this center. On the behalf, we are requesting you to send information on prison related books or send the copies so that we can keep them in our Resource Center. We will highly appreciate your cooperation for this endeavour. We hope that in future it will be large research center of prison field.

Library Program:

Prison is a confined area bounded by stonewalls and steel bars. Prisoners have to spend day and night within that specific confined area. So, they spend most of their time by just sleeping and chatting with each other. Their mind become dull due to no work and learning. It is important to make their active mind in prison. Library is the most effective method to make mind sharp. They get daily news and gain knowledge that helps them to use that knowledge after released. Therefore, we are starting library projects in different jails and in our training center. The jails administrator is also highly demanding for library. But, due to our limited resources, we could not fulfill their demand in all jails. We had already established library in Gorkha, Tanahun, Nakhu, Female jail, Kathmandu, Jhapa and Pokhara jails.

Angel Tree Program:

On 21st Dec. 2003, there were big crowd in the prisons of Kathmandu and Pokhara valley. Many children of prisoners and their care takers were gather in the prisons, to receive angel tree gifts. In this way prison Fellowship Volunteer, staff and Board members were very busy to distribute gifts to the children of prisoners. Other visitors were asking "who is giving such gifts for these poor children !" Their families and inmates were also looking wonderly, "what I received in gift !" etc. Angel Tree Program 2003 was successfully completed with gift distributing to 450 prisoners children in Christmas. We raise gift from Norwegian school, British School, Local churches and International Church. The gifts were distributed in Central Jail, Nakhu Jail, Dillibazar, Female Jail, Dhulikhel, Bhadragol, Kaski and Tanahu jails.
